• Provide robust information to assist in the allocation of resources to
teaching and other department;
• Provide a framework for course costing;
• Be the main reporting tool for monitoring the College's progress in terms of
achieving its wSUMs targets; and
• Provide information about a range of key performance indicators.
Merger Benefits/Opportunities
4.5. The merger will allow the further development of the statistical and
management systems, which will be better supported by a technical team that
will have strength-in-depth.
4.6. The Student Records team will have greater opportunity to implement new
electronic and web-enabled services (e.g. Columbus) that will benefit students
and members of staff.
4.7. The merger will assist in the development of an integrated document
management system, which should improve information handling and storage.
This will be essential given that the Student Record's team will process on
average 40,000 enrolments and 120,000 results per annum.
4.8. A merged Student Records team will afford an opportunity to develop and
deploy members of staff more effectively and thereby improve the quality and
reliability of student related data and information.
4.9. The merged College will have a Student & Statistical records team that will be
better able to cope with incidences of sick leave/turnover and other absences.
Merger Challenges
4.10. The development of a single student records system available for use from the
point of merger will be a major priority and significant challenge. The
development of the system will require careful project management. Failure to
have a reliable student records system would have a significant impact on the
availability of adequate and reliable management information as well as
impacting on the processing of student results and certification.
4.11. The integration of prior years' student data will be an essential element of the
merger integration plan and will require careful planning and be properly
resources in times of people and finance. . All three colleges, however, use
Capita's Unit-E products, which will significantly assist the integration process.
4.12. The development of an integrated student records system will necessitate a
thorough programme of development for staff involved in the processing of
student data.
4.13. Careful consideration will need to be given to balancing the need to centralise
the Student Records team whilst at the same time providing student related
services across the College's various campuses.
