Work on the New Marine Skills Centre
at Glasgow College of Nautical
Studies (GCNS) continues on at an
impressive pace.
The £5.6 million Marine Skills Centre
is the first part of the £300 million
New Campus Glasgow project, which
is set to deliver a landmark building
on the banks of the River Clyde at
Thistle Street on time and on budget
next April.
The Marine Skills Centre - a single
storey 450 square metre building
with three classrooms, office space
and changing facilities - is starting
to take shape with the completion
of the floor slabbing and Glulam
framing structure, followed by
installation of zinc cladding. A new
pontoon and access walkways for a
Free Fall Lifeboat installation have
been completed and are already
a significant feature in the River.
The boat itself will be installed in
January.
GCNS has been using the existing
Boat House for courses over recent
weeks but these have now ended
and the area was handed back to the
contractor on November 23 to finish
refurbishment.
New Life and Rescue Boats and
associated launching devices have
been order to replace those on the
existing GCNS Jetty and these will be
in place by March.
Richard Speight, Depute Principal
of Glasgow College of Nautical
Studies and Project Sponsor, said
"I am pleased to be able to report
that the Marine Skills Centre Project
is progressing well and remains on
programme and budget.
"If you do not come down to the
GCNS site often, it is worth a visit,
even just to glance at what is going
on from the Albert Bridge, Glasgow
Green or the north embankment
walkway.
"Even those of us involved with the
project are staggered at the imposing
and beneficial effect the various
structures will have on the area and
this particular part of the Clyde river.
Wait until the free fall boat is there -
it will become a Glasgow landmark!"
