23 Jan 13, 2010 010:16 PM Funding may follow student for childcare, but there is no conveint and AFFORDABLE childcare facilities
for staf members in Glasgow city centre.
To avoid distrubtion during class periods, last minute changes to cover timetables it would be another
benei t to New Glasgow College staf team for an early years childcare facilities on campus it would be
able to cater and of er l exable hours to suit staf /student work pattern.
24 Jan 14, 2010 9:53 AM I have concerns over the stai ng of the new College and would like clarii cation and reassurance. It is
obvious that with three college's merging into one that there will inevitable be a duplication of staf
across all levels…e.g. 3 x HR Section, 3 x IT Departments, 3 x Finance Departments etc. We have had
no hard information to explain how this overlap will be sustainable and if jobs will be safe as a result.
We have been told at several staf meetings that there will be no redundancies but I i nd this hard to
believe given the above facts. I know this is what several members of staf are worried about, especially
those who are further down the stai ng structure and are not privy to the information that many senior
managers are.
Another issue that I am concerned about, and was only brought to my attention last night whilst
I attended a Unison meeting, is harmonisation. The merger which took place about i ve years ago
with Food Technology and Building & Printing to produce Metropolitan College has resulted in many
unresolved issues which still remain to be settled. This mainly being that i ve years after merger all staf
are not on the same terms and conditions or holiday entitlement and some staf doing the same job are
being paid dif erent wages. It was stated that three sets of terms and conditions currently exist within
Metropolitan College. One being the old Food Tech (applying to their existing staf ), two being old
Building & Printing (applying to their existing staf ), and three being Metropolitan (which new members
of staf are assigned to). I was amazed to here this from the staf themselves. I have concerns that if you
now add another 2 college's into the mix, namely GCNS and Central, that you will have 5 sets of terms
and conditions causing further upset between all staf . Is this area being addressed and if so are 'best
conditions' being adopted across all Colleges to ensure that no one is disadvantaged?
I hope you can understand the concerns I have outlined and can address them and reassure all staf .
25 Jan 14, 2010 02:33 PM The treatment of staf over the years has been on the decline to the point where we are now being
treated like recalcitrant children. Professionalism is most certainly not evident from the management
and has certainly alienated many staf who i nd it dii cult to believe that most are going to benei t from
any change.
The push to merge the colleges only adds to the retisence which staf have about hidden agendas.
Considering hot desking for staf is an abomination and demonstrates the general ignorance of what is
now involved with notes, books, registers, quality documentation, record-keeping, e-mail and external
contacts.
It would be useful to streamline the management using ability, knowledge and commitment as a guide
rather than the present criteria.
26 Jan 15, 2010 9:38 AM I would like to suggest the new name for the college as:
Glasgow Universal College OR
The Universal College of Glasgow
Linda Turnbull (Organisational Development Unit, Glasgow Met, Cath St)
27 Jan 15, 2010 12:37 PM Glasgow is a very powerful brand name and shoudl appear in the new college's name. Keeping it
simple I propose "College of Glasgow" - CoG 'A big cog in a small world'.
The teeth of interconnecting cogs of dif erent dimensions, materials and colours could be open to all
sorts of positive interpretations - how things e.g. individuals, stakeholders, facilities, processes mesh
together, drive each other, depend on each other to deliver a world class learning experience.
