CONTINUED OVERLEAF
22 Jan 14, 2010 02:33 PM I would like to think that the practicality of the merger compares favourably with the idea however,
judgement will be made in the fullness of time and hopefully not at the expense of the individual or
individuallity.
23 Jan 15, 2010 10:24 AM ESOL Department is not mentioned for Glasgow Metropolitan College despite the fact that it is a far
larger department than that in Central.
Harmonisation of Staf wages from initial merger - a number staf on the same grading are being paid
less than colleagues - why is this issue not being addressed?
24 Jan 15, 2010 01:25 PM Major concerns include the following:
Lack of staf car parking.
Loss of facilities i.e currently have a swimming pool yet there are no plans for this in the new build.
Lack of any real reassurance on job security.
Concerns over phasing in of new college i.e how will this impact on current learners.
Furthermore our staf team feel there will be a loss of identity. Staf have invested many years of their
career at this college and will be sorry when it comes to an end. The team of Sport, Leisure and Beauty
Therapy work well together and would like to continue with this rather than be split, and considering
the link with sports therapy, it is a sensible relationship.
25 Jan 17, 2010 08:41 PM I thought merger was based on an educationale rationale - I have yet to see any evidence that this is
the case. It appears that the only drivers are i nancial and estates.
26 Jan 17, 2010 08:51 PM As Fiona Hyslop no longer has responsibilty for the Education portfolio at Holyrood, I would expect her
name to be removed from Section 12.
The concept of the "New College" as a centralised entity in a "new learning quarter" is exciting and
should be more economic as regards "running costs" than the existing three estates. This will, of course,
require to be proven in the Business Case.
There are many references to new approaches…" technologically saturated facilities, new ideas and
approaches, inspired teaching, integrated approaches…" but few references to the use of the concept
of "partnerships" in the classroom between the teacher and learner(s).
27 Jan 18, 2010 8:16 AM The process of merger has been conducted in circumstances of extreme secrecy. Only when the main
decisions have been made and when a Principal with a remuneration package of £150,000 has been
appointed is there any attempt at consultation with stakeholders. It should be mentioned that those
who stand to gain most i nancially from a merger are the people who have been making the decisions.
This is not intended to imply there has been any i nancial impropriety, I do not believe there has been.
What I am saying is a genuine consultation ought to be part of the system of checks and balances.
28 Jan 18, 2010 02:56 PM In Section 12, although mention of Scotland's Colleges is made, there is no specii c mention of Stow
College or other Glasgow colleges which we found surprising.
29 Jan 18, 2010 03:35 PM It would be important that the college aims for high quality education this may be seen by aiming for
EFQM, ISO 9001, ISO 14001 etc.
