New Campus Development Strategy
New Campus Glasgow flagship in
Sustainable Glasgow project
New Campus Glasgow could become
one of the flagship projects of an
ambitious initiative to make Glasgow
one of Europe's most sustainable
cities.
The Sustainable Glasgow project
is aiming to change the world's
perceptions of the city by
significantly reducing Glasgow's
carbon emissions, improving the
environment, and tackling fuel
poverty.
The wide-ranging low carbon
programme could place most homes,
offices and public buildings on a
district heating network that would
deliver cleaner heat at a lower cost.
The initiative could also see the
creation of an ultra high-speed fibre
optic network linking every citizen,
business, and public building to an
unrivalled digital service that would
make Glasgow a magnet for creative
and knowledge based industries.
NCG is leading a feasibility study
which will examine how the new
estate could be integrated into a
City-wide sustainable energy plan.
Sustainable Glasgow is a joint public
and private sector initiative which
aims to deliver a significant reduction
in CO2 emissions over the next 10
years and New Campus Glasgow is
ready to be a key part of the project.
Iain Marley, Project Director at
New Campus Glasgow, said: "I
am delighted that NCG is able to
play such an important role and
contribute to Glasgow's ambitious
sustainability strategy.
"We are passionate about the
opportunity to design a sustainable
campus for the new college. The
associated environmental, economic
and social benefits are enormous and
illustrate just some of the dividends
that will be realised through the
investment in the New Campus."
The partners in the Sustainable
Glasgow initiative include Glasgow
City Council, Scottish and Southern
Energy, SourceOne, Veolia
Environnement, the University of
Strathclyde, Elutions, and Blitzer
Clancy and Company.
Among the things the project will
look at are: identifying options
for district heating and cooling
networks, sustainable transport
networks, and improved water and
waste water handling; working with
the 2014 Commonwealth Games and
other public and private investment
programmes to demonstrate
leadership in sustainability; and
delivering a vision and funding model
for a Sustainable Glasgow.
The project team and college representatives have
been working intensively since Atkins' appointment
and fantastic progress has been made. The first and
second rounds of User Engagement meetings have been
concluded, and the Estate Steering Group, Curriculum
User Group and Support Services User Group have
endorsed key planning assumptions including curriculum
strategy, space standards, utilisation targets, clustering
concepts and key adjacency requirements.
The Estate Steering Group and New Campus Glasgow
Board have also provided feedback on estate options and
the preferred masterplan is being finalised for approval
by the individual College Boards in December.
The masterplan will confirm the agreed planning
assumptions, define the total space requirement, explain
the disposition of buildings and activities on the City and
Riverside sites, and set out the delivery timetable.
Amongst the many other activities, three merit special
mention:
· Our town planning strategy has been agreed with
Glasgow City Council
· Our design team are working with the University of
Strathclyde to share masterplanning concepts and
ensure complementary development strategies
· We are working with Sustainable Glasgow to help take
forward this exciting initiative - see article below
