INFRASTRUCTURE RISKS/OPPORTUNITIES
1. A Single Integrated and physically connected Network
All three colleges have high connectivity JANET links of ering the
opportunity for network infrastructure integration prior to the physical
moves. It is particularly important that the three currently distinct
(but virtually connected through Janet and the internet) networks are
physically linked together.
Having one physical network will
support staf and student mobility across and between
the three sites
allow staf and student to use a single domain name (login details)
cementing the new college logo
establish a single new email service (single email) with common
calendaring and shared document facilities
consider the deployment of 'a proven web interface either
ENQUIRER or COLUMBUS' as portal management tools
We are conscious of the importance of a 'digital plumbing approach'
- ensuring the infrastructure is i t for purpose, scalable and future
proofed. In our case we would be looking to establish between now
and 2014 the correct working technical and business system models
that can be deployed with ease into the new estate. We will work
closely with the NCG appointed ICT consultant to ensure that we are in
a position to make best use of the modern new build facilities.
We have to establish 'a core set of requirement' to be determined
early to ensure these are incorporated within the i rst building (hub
servicing the new campus).
Possibility of pooling skills/expertise in VoIP (cheap calls, integration
with other applications, l exibility - of campus use, less bandwidth).
1.1 Authentication
Opportunity to provide a single secure authentication facility providing
access to digital media rich resources and learning materials both on
and of campus. The long term intention is to allow all users access to
all their resources irrespective of their physical location, this we believe
will eases pressure on the physical estate.
In the short term we will create a unique user name for each member
of staf and for every student.
There is a real risk of missing the opportunity of bringing together three
distinct 'digital identities'.
1.2 Storage
Consolidated storage allows for economies of scale and reduced
costs and power utilisation. We will as we plan the new estate pay
particular attention to the sustainability agenda when we dei ne our
requirements. Having a centralised Storage Area Network allows
•
•
•
•
for ease of backup and provision of business continuity and disaster
recovery facilities.
We are working with the ICT consultants to dei ne the exact
requirement so that an adequate investment model can be developed
- the planned infrastructure will take full consideration of the long term
needs of all colleges.
In the short term, once the three physical networks are connected,
we will examine the potential of maximising the existing data storage
facilities.
1.3 Internet Connectivity
We will continue to of er a high speed connection to the internet.
Having a number of connections to the internet will provide a
opportunity to create a more resilient network with the ability to reroute
connections as required.
1.4 Operating Systems
Cost savings through consolidation of licenses and other supplier
agreements.
Opportunity to consider other solutions will not be ignored. It is
however important in the short term to expect NOVELL technologies
to be deployed as the Network Operating System. In the years up to
2014 when the new Estate is created we may have to consider other
NOS. The main driving factor will be ease of integration in the overall
'Business Intelligence through building Intelligence type approach.
1.5 Common Desktop software
Cost savings and reduced support overhead through standardization.
Requirement for up/re-skilling staf and updating teaching materials.
2. A Single New College Website
This is a fantastic opportunity to communicate directly with all
stakeholders. It will also act as the main vehicle for the new college
identity and brand. The new website will benei t from a best-in-class
approach. Clearly the three colleges already have a web presence.
The new website will built on the strengths of each
3. A Single Intranet
A staf intranet will be a critical tool for communication and
administration across a newly merged organisation which is
geographically dispersed across the city centre. A detailed examination
of requirements and options will be necessary before deciding on
a solution. However, there are signii cant advantages to using open
source tools such as Joomla / Wordpress and any Intranet must be
capable of being fully supported in house.
4. A Single Integrated Email (including
calendaring and document sharing facilities)
Standardisation will lead to reduced operating and licensing costs and
better collective bargaining with suppliers.
