29 Jan 15, 2010 01:25 PM Communication: There has been a decided lack of pertinent and reliable information at a lecturing level.
This has proved particularly dii cult when faced with questions from students.
Our People: Throughout the merger there has been talk of improved opportunities whilst staf are more
concerned with their current position. There is a need for greater clarity regarding the opportunities/
stai ng.

33 Jan 15, 2010 04:31 PM Our members have no coni dence that their existing terms and conditions will be protected and
cite Glasgow Metropolitan's reluctance to complete harmonisation of working hours , annual leave
entitlement and pay scales as an example.UNISON has no desire nor wants any part in a race to the
bottom in relation to harmonisation of pay working hours and overall terms and conditions.
We do not believe that harmonisation will take place within a reasonable timescale and have fears that
the process of harmonisation will drag on for years or just left on the shelf and forgotten about.
Our members jobs are threatened by the proposal. There are no details of any shared services and
whether there is any intentions to outsource any services.
We are concerned about the loss of staf coni dence during mergers and our members believe that
what is actually going on is a railroading exercise with only cursory consideration for the concerns of
the support staf as demonstrated by the lack of proper and meaningful consultation and negotiation.
UNISON members in Further Education Colleges have experienced l awed mergers or restructurings
many times over the years we would want reassurances of full and meaningful involvement of the trade
unions as we believe that failure to do so will only result in compounding what is already an all time low
morale amongst our members.
34 Jan 17, 2010 03:03 PM How can we aspire to a world-class college when we have second-rate conditions of service?
Comment by Martin McGuire, EIS Union Chair, Glasgow Metropolitan:
In 2008 there was an industrial dispute in Glasgow Metropolitan College, between the EIS teaching
union and college management, which resulted in 100% of those who cast a vote, voting for strike
action. Patience of the lecturers, who are normally very moderate as a union, had i nally worn out.
It rel ected the sad and weary experience of industrial relations and negotiations between the two
parties since the merger of Glasgow College of Building and Printing and the Glasgow College of Food
Technology. Staf has yet to see harmonized terms and conditions in salary or holiday entitlement,
despite the fact that it is over four years since the last merger.
Our Union representatives presented our case to the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service on
the 3rd March 2008. The Union hoped that there was scope for the development of mediation, and
ACAS suggested that, after dealing with that particular industrial dispute, both sides should sit down
with independent mediation to resolve our dif erences. Despite the EIS repeatedly requesting this at
subsequent negotiations, this has always been ignored by Metropolitan management.
The main sources of conl ict are identii ed as conditions of service and pay, and our concern would be
that Metropolitan is being used as the host model.
Some comparisons for illustration purposes: (top of lecturer unpromoted scale)
In our salary settlement in 2004 we were 3% above sector average. (6th)
In our salary settlement in 2005 we were 2% above sector average. (7th)
In our salaråy settlement in 2006 we were 0.15% above sector average.(14th)
We should be treated by senior management as the well-educated and highly skilled lecturers that we
are.
