This on site early years city centre facility catered for children 6weeks to 5 years until September 2009
when unfortuantly due to a decision made by GCNS management baby room closed with loss of 9
babies/families and 6 jobs and further 10 employees will face redundancy at end of July. Thistle Nursery
now successfully caters for 50 children from 2-5 years old. Parents who use this essential facility are
gcns staf , gcns, langside, Strathclyde and Caledonian university students aswell as past students who
are now successfully employed and outside clients.
Thistle Nursery of ers hands on work experience to GCNS childcare, drama and sports students.
Nursery has been in partnership with Glasgow City Council since 1999 a partnership which is now very
dii cult to obtain.
Thistle Nursery is registered with Scottish Care Commission to which nursery has been given very good
grading and underwent successful HMI inspections. Staf are registered with scottish social services
council (this is a essential requirement in childcare employment)

Parent partcipation is shown daily and especially since UNEXPECTED news of closure parents
have supported ongoing campain to keep nursery open with proposed consultation with GCNS
management to of er suggested ideas, explore alternative options such as increasing fees or extending
nursery roll by implementing questionaires, protests/rally's with hope to be resolved as yet have been
unsuccessful.
Parents studying will be given peace of mind that child is being cared for in a safe and caring
educational nearby enviroment while Parents can undertake study and continue further education.
In situation of a child becomes unwell or in need of emergency treatment it is convient and easily
accessable for parents assitance, especially when af ecting single parents situation.
Parents, families, staf , students and children want take active role of incoperating new nursery, that
enables continuing this important worthwhile service within New Glasgow College and community of
city centre.
Therefore I strongly believe that 21st century successful New Glasgow College who will have thousands
of students studying further education must continue of ering an essential on site high quality early
years childcare facility.
21 Jan 14, 2010 11:41 AM I work at GCNS in a Faculty Oi ce and have concerns regarding stai ng for the New College Glasgow.
Job security, for administration staf , is of great concern to people. Little information is available about
how the merger will af ect administration staf . I am looking for clarii cation and reassureance that jobs
will not be lost if the merger goes ahead.
Will our jobs be secure?
Will we be moving to Cathedral Street and if so when?
What job will be be doing in the future ( I work in a Faculty Oi ce, so will this kind of oi ce still exist in
the new set up).
Will we have to apply for our jobs?
Will we have a say in what department we work?
Will our length of service, qualii cations, experience etc be taken into account when looking at jobs for
people?
How will terms and conditions dif er?
Can you ensure that no person is disadvantaged following the merge?
Can you guarantee no compulsory redundancies?
