CONTINUED OVERLEAF
29 Jan 20, 2010 10:11 AM Anniesland College supports the vision of the proposed merged college but wonders if the mission
also includes society. Glasgow and Scotland are composed of individuals and enterprise, but also
of groups/communities of practice that make up society. This would help the mission and vision to
articulate better with each other.
Vision
The vision is powerful. The vision perhaps would be enhanced by reference to how this new college
will relate to the college sector in Glasgow, West of Scotland and Scotland. Partnership with other civic
institutions is mentioned but there is no mention of partnership with other SFC-funded bodies.
Values
The values are well developed. Anniesland welcomes the contribution the new college will make to
equality, diversity, inclusiveness, excellence and achievement, innovation and partnership working.
The new college desires to lead the sector in new ways of working. It might be mindful to rel ect on
what the rest of the sector can of er to the new college.
30 Jan 20, 2010 Firstly, as a quality professional, let me point out that the vision and mission statements should be
reversed. A vision is simply a description of what we want our organisation to become, or what we
would like our organisation to be known as, and for, in i ve to ten or more years. The terms 'vision' and
'mission' are often used interchangeably. Where they are separated, the vision describes the end point
- the Promised Land as it were, the 'what', while the mission is the challenge of realising the vision - the
wilderness journey, the 'how'. The mission is therefore the means to the end which is the vision. Vision
answers the question 'What?' Mission answers the question 'How?' Reverse the headings as shown in the
consultation document and the content of both would then be appropriate for the new college.
Secondly, when considering the values, there are a few points of clarii cation required for inclusion:
Corporate Social Responsibility - We are committed to minimising negative impact on the
environment and will incorporate sustainability into the curriculum and our estates.
People First- this should replace the individual.
We are committed to putting the learner at the centre of our activities
We are driven by the needs and expectations of our customers
We believe that staf is our most important asset.
There is a greater degree of simplicity and less conl ict with this as not all individuals can be
accommodated simultaneously but the college can support, as required, individuals' learning
experience, team working, partnership arrangements, staf expectations, and other client group needs
as set by Policy and Strategy.

31 SQA is pleased to endorse the ambitious vision set out in the consultation document. In particular, it is
encouraged to see a focus on new and innovative approaches to learning through the increased use of
e- and m- learning. SQA would welcome continued and closer partnership with New College on these
ventures, as we continue to increase our provision of e-assessment, learning and services.
The emphasis on engagement with industry both nationally and internationally is also welcomed as
this corresponds with the joined-up approach being pursued by all those involved in the development
and delivery of skills, training and qualii cations.
Finally, we are pleased to see that the values that underpin the FE sector will be maintained by New
College.
32 To aspire to be a world class institution is laudable but in my view is a long way of . Looking at the most
recent SFC key performance indicators in regard to attainment and retention only Glasgow College
of Nautical Studies performs above the mean for retention for full time F.E. enrolments with Glasgow
Metropolitan College and Central College Glasgow performing signii cantly below the mean i gure.
I am more than happy to share the value set of the new College.
33 The proposed vision, mission and values for the merged college demonstrates a commitment of
excellence to all staf and students of the new college.
34 We would strongly support the vision, mission and values as set out in this document. We particularly
welcome the commitment to partnership and the recognition that much more can be achieved
through working with others.
