CONTINUED OVERLEAF
15 Jan 13, 2010 01:20 PM I am worried and very concerned about job losses and how the merger will af ect me as an individual.
Clear information is not being given.
16 Jan 13, 2010 01:29 PM Variety is the spice of life unless you're a college apparently.
17 Jan 13, 2010 02:22 PM I accept that all the Colleges are in need of a facelift and I can see a reason for all the Colleges on
Cathedral Street to merge into one super campus. However, Nautical College is a specialist College with
an excellent international reputation and consideration should be given to GCNS retaining its specialist
identity and reverting back to the days when it was a Nautical College whilst at the same time providing
learning for the local community. It does need to have state of the art facilities and provide the latest
in maritime training with excellent accommodation for all students close by at St Lukes. I believe that
International Agencies and students may be confused by a change in name and everything possible
will have to be done to ensure this goes smoothly.
18 Jan 13, 2010 02:29 PM I understand the rationale, however I have concerns in the following areas :
Maintaining a high quality learning environment
Lack of communication between management and staf
Changes in terms and conditions

19 Jan 13, 2010 04:35 PM I'm not sure that big is always better.
Vulnerable learners may be more likely to 'get lost' in the system and drop out of courses more quickly.
The Gorbals community will lose a valuable resource when most of the provision of non community
courses is in Cathedral Street. For some vulnerable learners it may be too big a step to go to the city
centre to attend college.
20 Jan 13, 2010 09:19 PM I agree the merger needs to happen.
21 Jan 13, 2010 010:16 PM New world wide class facility (new Glasgow college) for longlife learners (students) coming together is
a af ective new direction of further education…pity no convient early education facility is not available,
planned or proposed!
22 Jan 14, 2010 02:33 PM Combining colleges that have no natural common ground can be both positive and negative. Positive
because there should be little interference in the day to day running of each establishment. Negative
when one system of management is forced upon establishments which must operate under dif erent
rules in order to satisfy their customers and staf . Overall understanding of the individual institutions
appears to be missing and the political dog-i ghts to nothing to instill coni dence, in fact the opposite is
true and makes the process much more complicated and the ultimate goal more dii cult to achieve.
The potential loss of the college name (Nautical) would be a hammer blow to survival prospects.
"Equality of opportunity for all." This would indeed be a revelation where "equality" replaces "bias."
23 Jan 15, 2010 12:37 PM The banner headlines on page 4 are very eye-catching and position the rationale for merger well in the
context of Scottish Government and Scottish Funding Council's needs and expectations.
Scottish Government's priority for:
"Colleges as highly ef ective, world class organisations; with high quality building, facilities and
equipment contributing to enhancing the experience for learners'
Scottish Funding Council's need for Colleges to look at:
"Collaboration and co-location in order to ensure an ef ective and ei cient solution…" to provide the
most ef ective learning environment for the 21st century"
Perhaps a third bannå≈er headline would be appropriate to highlight the transformation of 'estates of
poor quality' and' no longer i t for purpose' into new world class facilities in the heart of a vibrant and
friendly city that will be a great place to work in and retain and attract great staf - i.e. enhancing not
just the learning experience but the working experience.
24 Jan 15, 2010 01:25 PM Whilst the rationale sounds positive, many of the rationale points are currently already achieved at this
college. From the many benei ts proposed the following are the only areas of improvement:
"Developing work-ready specialism, responsive to local and national training priorities, with attractive,
l exible, modern and technology saturated facilities"
"Avoids duplication and unnecessary competition in key parts of the curriculum for Glasgow"
"Sustains i nancial viability in order to allow continued investment in its estate, facilities, equipment and
our staf "
