40 Jan 18, 2010 02:29 PM This section contains details on management arrangements surrounding the appointment of the new
principal and the shadow board and their priorities. Management will have to continue to be aware
of the sensitivities of staf , particularly in light of the uncertainty around whether or not the merger
may incur any staf redundancy. A 'no redundancies as a direct result of merger' statement would ease
tension considerably.
The paper also provides signii cant detail on communication arrangements and outlets. However,
this section does appear to be lacking a risk assessment, a particular gap may be the absence of a
contingency plan in the event of delays to the proposed timetable, which itself seems to be limited
to the end of 2010 and any kind of early communication on possible structures and whether a full
matching in process will occur.
There also appears to be a lack of success indicators as well as specii c review timeframes for the merger
as a whole.
Suggestions for name of new college:
GLASGOW CAPITAL COLLEGE - The word 'Capital' has a number of positive connotations including
excellence, wealth and premium. It would also allude to the fact that although Edinburgh is Scotland's
Capital City, Glasgow will undoubtedly assert itself as the Education Capital of both Scotland and beyond.
41 Jan 18, 2010 02:56 PM As noted above, Stow College supports the principle of Boards of Management taking decision in
partnership with staf and learners. The issues set out in Sections 8 and 10 are a matter for Boards, staf
and learners to consider. This also applies to determining a name for the new college.
42 Jan 18, 2010 03:00 PM Some staf are concerned about redundancies.
Suggestion for name - New College Glasgow.
43 Jan 18, 2010 03:35 PM It would be of benei t that all staf - teaching and support - know where that they i t into the new structure
and that they have an opportunity to comment through representatives on any proposed changes.
The new college could be called - Glasgow College
It would be be good to know the status of the quality standards held by the 3 colleges since any
merger will have an impact on the whether the awarding body will require to re-accredite a standard or
to simply modify the scope.
44 Jan 18, 2010 04:32 PM Concerns about redundancy.
45 Jan 19, 2010 08:32 PM It is recommended that a collaborative approach throughout the West of Scotland is taken to identify
curriculum maps so that opportunities for curriculum growth and decline can be shared across all local
colleges, including James Watt. The sharing of LMI will allow a more strategic approach to curriculum,
stai ng, i nancial and estates planning. Shared approaches to long term planning will encourage the
maximisation of staf skills and market demand throughout the college sector.
The sharing of LMI, curriculum maps, staf expertise and estates plans should be used to inform
strategic decisions on curriculum, staf and estates for Colleges throughout the sector.
46 Jan 19, 2010 010:58 PM Staf are pleased that they have been asked to comment on the merger proposal document and are at this
time understandably anxious with regard to their job security. It is hoped that some assurance and clear
message can be sent to staf , in particular those working under the 'host' College's terms and conditions that
their knowledge, experience and passion for supporting the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion agenda will
continue to be valued, and that important planning meeting can carry on without fear of job loss.
There is a danger during any such time of change that staf can become unsettled with the threat of
possible non voluntary redundancies at the back of their minds.
We hope to be given some assurance that our world class College, which we believe passionately will
make a dif erence to the lives of Glasgow's learners in the delivery of outstanding teaching, learning
and support, will also respect and value staf who are the absolute key to making the College a success
With regard to the name - having been involved in the previous 'Phoenix' merger model which saw
GCPB and GCFT dissolve and create the newly named and expensively branded Glasgow Metropolitan
College, it could be considered that an additional expense in re-branding another new College in Glasgow
is not needed. If the 'Host' model is indeed followed, is there a reason why the 'Host College has to change
it's name so soon after it was christened? Could an acknowledgment of the curricula specialisms (e.g
School of Maritime Studies at Metropolitan River Campus, for example) in dif erent departments under the
over-arching name of Glasgow Metropolitan not be considered a sensible and cost saving option?
