1 Nov 23, 2009 01:14 PM Think the proposed name of New College Glasgow is obscene! Are the Colleges really paying a
Marketing individual ridiculous sums of money for a name that on the second day of Merger will no
longer be applicable, as lets face it, the college is only "New" for one day. Furthermore the costs of
rebranding would cost a fortune!!
Surely instead the name should encompass all three Colleges names, or utilise the most professional
name or most marketed name already. As an employee at GCNS I feel that Glasgow Metropolitan
College would be the ideal name.

In the Glasgow Metropolitan College, we have a darkroom. Many photography students shoot using
i lm and it is very special to be able to develop our own images in our darkroom. This is a facility which
I feel makes the Met one of the best colleges to study Photography. I would advise that if the colleges
merge, a darkroom should be kept for the photography department. Most colleges have done away
with their darkrooms, which is a shame as i lm photography seems to be becoming more and more
popular these days. It makes our college one step above the others.
Photography is becoming more and more popular to study also, and this year there are even more
classes. This means more studio space is being used. I am worried that merging colleges will reduce
the space available to students. We have many studios at the moment in Glasgow Met, but it doesn't
seem enough. Workshops take place in these studios for classes, but when we need to shoot individual
projects - there can only be around 2 spaces per studio. For increasing numbers, reducing space would
be a major problem for the development of students photographic skills and experience in the studio. If
anything, it would be great to have more studios.
I just want to add, I am in my i nal year of study at the Met and the quality of education, organisation
and materials available is outstanding. For me, the facilities available have helped me develop my
skills rapidly in three years. I hope these facilities continue to develop, to give further students the best
education and experience possible. Photography is an expensive subject to study and the equipment
available, and continually upgraded, makes it af ordable for students to study.

And reminds me of the quote from the i lm Citizen Kane by Orson Welles - "You can fool all of the
people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time. But you can't fool all of the people, all
of the time"
I have seen the decimation of the computing department at GCNS, to "prepare for the merger".
This department prepared its students so well, that they came back to thank their lecturers and said
that they found 3rd year university easier than the students who had gone straight to university.
They were told to stop running their NC level course and less than a week later Metropolitan started
advertising to run an NC course they had never previously run, and guess what, it was the one the
GCNS computing department were told to drop….
Coincidence or What !
