Paloma Pinto
SPORTS THERAPIST (Unknown)
Paloma Pinto is one of the founders of the
Body Equality in Athletic Therapies (BEAT)
group. This was set up in 2017, along with
three other University of East London (UEL)
student Sports Therapists and their
Programme Leader Michael
Cole. The inspiration came from frustration for
Pinto, "Despite all of us being students of a
healthcare degree, we were looking at the
male and female bodies with different eyes.
Instead of learning from our differences, we
were avoiding the opposite sex and, in some
cases, missing out on learning
opportunities altogether." Gender
representation within sport, healthcare, higher
education and the fitness industries are topics
considered by BEAT. Body confidence, body
dysmorphia and inequalities are
addressed with a focus on race, sexuality and
other identities.
Angelina Avallone
MAKEUP ARTIST (Unknown)
In 2012, more than a dozen productions on
the Great White Way had the creative hand of
make-up artist Angelina Avallone to thank for
their look. Audiences could see her skills in
four Broadway shows: 'Rock of Ages', 'Nice
Work If You Can Get It', 'Chaplin', 'An Enemy
of the People' and the Roundabout's revival
of 'The Mystery of Edwin Drood'. There's a
common philosophy to her work, "Make-up is
an interesting art. My approach is from a
designer's standpoint." Avallone, who was
born in Bulgaria, received an MFA from the
Yale School of Drama. "It's not about making
someone pretty. It's about creating a
character and telling a story. A writer does
that with words, an actor with his
performance, a make-up designer does it
through colour and shapes."
