Francesca Woodman
PHOTOGRAPHER (1958 - 1981)
Francesca Woodman was a photographer
who, despite her short career, was extremely
influential. Her photography pushed the
boundaries of experimental photography and
played with shutter speed and exposure. She
continuously challenged the idea that the
camera freezes a moment in time, having her
images show motion blur in the posed figure
to depict movement. Many of Woodman's
images are printed small scale to convey a
fragility to them and make them seem more
personal and intimate. The images often had
her as the subject matter and explored
themes of identity and isolation. Woodman's
tragic suicide at 22 cut short the life of a
woman who had the capacity to go on to be
one of the great photographers of our time.
