Charlotte Cooper
TENNIS PLAYER (1870 - 1966)
Cooper was a great tennis champion, winning
her first Wimbledon singles title in1895, aged
25. She went on to win Wimbledon four more
times. Cooper was the first female player to
serve overarm and was an amazing volleyer,
playing an attacking game by enticing her
opponents up to the net. In the 1900 Paris
Olympic Games, women made their first
appearance. Cooper competed in the
women's singles and mixed doubles, winning
gold in both. She became the first women to
win Olympic gold in an individual event. In
1908, she became the oldest winner of
Wimbledon aged 37 years and 296 days; a
record she still holds. She held the record for
competing in 11 Wimbledon singles finals
between 1895 and 1912, which was not
broken until 1994, by Martina Navratilova .
Elizabeth Arden
BEAUTY ENTREPRENEUR (1870 - 1966)
Elizabeth Arden was an entrepreneur and
pioneer in the beauty sector, campaigning to
change public views on cosmetics and paving
the way for making the use of cosmetics
respectable and more socially acceptable.
She opened her first salon in New York City in
1910. In 1915 her company became a
successful global brand used by women
worldwide. In 1922 she opened a salon in
Paris then in South America and Australia.
Arden was the first to offer in-store makeovers
and high-end spas. She pioneered in beauty
products like travel-sized items. Arden was a
dedicated Suffragette and in 1912 she
marched and supplied 15,000 suffragettes
with red lipsticks as a sign of solidarity. Later
she created cosmetic lines for women serving
in the military. Throughout her career she
opened over 100 salons worldwide with a line
of approximately 300 cosmetic products.
