Carol Chomsky
LINGUIST (1930 - 2008)
Carol Chomsky was an American linguist and
education specialist who was best known for
her work in helping children's understanding
of language. She developed techniques to
help children read more fluently and
her strategy of repeated reading is still used
today. Chomsky's education includes a
bachelor's degree in French and a doctoral
degree in linguistics from Harvard. She also
served on the faculty of the prestigious
Harvard Graduate School of Education from
1972 until 1997.
Sarah Winnemucca
INTERPRETER (1844 - 1891)
Sarah Winnemucca born in 1844 and was a
Northern Paiute educator, author and
interpreter. She was best known as an
advocate for the rights of Native Americans
and as an interpreter for the military. She used
her language skills to gain better amenities
and treatment for her people and protect
their livelihoods from white settlers.
Winnemucca was the first Native American
woman to have a book published and it
contained the legacy and perspective of her
culture. Her statue, a testament to her work
supporting the First Nation people, is in the
U.S Capitol.
