Bessie Coleman
PILOT (1892 - 1926)
Coleman was the world's first African American
woman pilot and the first civilian licensed African
American pilot in the world. Known for performing
flying tricks in aviation exhibitions and air shows.
Coleman wanted to encourage women and
African Americans to achieve their dreams.
Coleman applied to flight schools after her
brothers returned from service in World War 1,
teasing her that French women could fly
airplanes and she could not. She moved to
France attending the Caudron Brothers' School
of Aviation in Le Crotoy. She was committed to
promoting aviation and combating racism, giving
speeches and showing her air tricks films to
audiences. She refused to speak anywhere that
segregated or discriminated against African
Americans. In 1922, she performed the first
public flight by an African American woman. In
1926, Coleman and mechanic William Wills went
on a test flight that went wrong; both Coleman
and Wills died.
