La Malinche
INTERPRETER (1500 - 1529)
La Malinche was an Aztec woman who was
best known for her multilingual status and
involvement in the Spanish-Aztec war. She
was the daughter of a chief and so received a
higher level of education than most and hence
she became an interpreter for the Spanish.
When her father passed away, she was sold
as a slave by her mother.
Elizabeth Fry
SOCIAL / PRISON REFORM (1780 - 1845)
Elizabeth Fry was an English prison reformer,
social reformer and Quaker who was often
known as the "angel of prisons." Her most
notable work involved a new legislation which
improved the treatment of prisoners. She also
established a homeless shelter in London,
campaigned for the abolition of the slave trade
and opened a training centre for nurses to
help wounded soldiers. In honour and
recognition of her work she featured on the
English £5 from 2001-2016, shown reading to
prisoners. She is also depicted on the stained
glass window at All Saint's Church in London.
