Alice Jacqueline Perry graduated at Queen's
College Galway in 1906, with a first-class
honours' degree in Civil Engineering. She is
known to be the first ever woman to graduate
in Great Britain and Ireland with an
Engineering degree, and possibly the first
woman in the world. She was part of a family
that had multiple successes within
engineering, her uncle being the inventor of
the navigational gyroscope. Unfortunately,
Perry's father passed away around the time of
her graduation which held her back in
continuing her education. He father was the
county surveyor in Galway West, and due to
his passing Alice Perry took a temporary
position pursuing this job until they found
someone permanent. She was the first female
to hold this work title in Ireland.
