Eve Arnold
PHOTOGRAPHER (1912 - 2012)
One of the most important photojournalists of
the twentieth century, Arnold had a prolific
career documenting the ordinary and famous including
Marilyn Monroe, Yves Saint Laurent,
Malcolm X, and heads of state.
Arnold took a keen interest in photographing
the Civil Rights and Black Power movements
in the US as well as the rigid Soviet Union and
China. She alternated between glamorous
photos of cinema stars and portraits of
everyday life and experiences. The hardest
task for Arnold was to make the mundane
interesting. 'I looked for a sense of reality with
everything I did . . . . I found a way of working
which pleased me.' Her interest in "the poor,
the old, the underdog" continued as
she captured the gentle realness of all
humans.
Alexis Hunter
ARTIST/PHOTOGRAPHER (1948 - 2014)
Alexis Hunter is a Photographer whose work
explored feminist issues. She considered her
work to be anti-patriarchy, with works
exploring the gaze in relation to men, creating
what is supposedly a female gaze rather than
a male gaze. She challenged the norms of
gender in the 1970S, when at this time
women could not hire or buy things such as a
car without a man's signature. She was
inspired to challenge the sexist advertising of
women in the 70s. Furthermore Hunter had a
background to advertising which she applied
to her work through incorporating text along
with images, often with humour. Her work is
influential as it went against expected gender
norms while questioning the patriarchy
imposed on women.
