Karen Drake
ATHLETE & EXPLORER (Unknown)
Karen Drake has been a participant of sport
and adventure her whole life, although in 1993
she suffered a serious accident whilst rock
climbing leaving her paralysed. Not phasing
her in the slightest Drake found an alternative
to still be able to enjoy what she loved,
becoming more interested in para-cycling just
a short three years later after her accident
Drake had set off to cycle through the
Himalayas from Kyrgyzstan along the old silk
route to China and Pakistan to raise money
for a Scottish charity called Scotland's
Alternative Skiers. From what was a hobby for
Drake soon turned into a career where she
participated in more competitive races to end
up becoming a part of the 2010 ParaOlympics
in London, winning two bronze
medals.
Amelia Earhart
AVIATOR & AUTHOR (1897 - 1937)
From a young age Earhart was always
fascinated with adventure and exploring
things and by the time she was in her 20's she
started gaining more knowledge in flying soon
becoming the first female passenger to cross
the Atlantic Ocean by airplane in 1928. Then
again in 1932 Earhart made a nonstop
transatlantic flight becoming the first female to
achieve this thus then receiving the United
States Distinguished Flying Cross. Though in
1937 Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan
attempted to complete a circumnavigational
flight of the globe making Earhart the first
female to achieve this, though both
disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean. It
wasn't till a year and six month later that both
were pronounced dead.
