Cindy Lee Van Dover
DEEP-SEA BIOLOGIST (1954 - present)
Cindy Lee Van Dover began her work in
chemosynthetic ecosystems in 1982, joining
the first hydrothermal vents on the East
Pacific Rise. She received her Ph.D. in 1989
and qualified as a pilot a year later. She has
explored nearly all of the known vent fields in
the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. She is
currently the Harvey Smith Professor of
Biological Oceanograpgy and chair of the
Division of Marine Science and Conservation
at Duke University. She has published over 90
academic papers, as well as enclyclopedia
entries and extended abstracts.
Tierney Thys
MARINE BIOLOGIST (1966 - present)
Dr. Tierney Thys is a biologist, filmmaker and
Research Associate at California Academy of
Sciences. In 2004, she was named a National
Geographic Emerging Explorer. She has
traveled to more than 60 countries and joined
many National Geographic Expeditions.
Tierney helped produce aware-winning
documentaries "Strange Days on Planet
Earth" and "Shape of Life". She is now an
independent filmmaker and speaker, and is
also a certified pilot and diver. She has been
citied in other people's literature, including
"Girls Research!: Amazing Tales of Female
Scientists".
