Madeleine Nobbs
HEATING & VENTILATION ENGINEER (1914 - 1970)
Building engineer Madeleine Marie Nobbs started off
working as a typist and knew she was in the wrong
career and her strong areas she worked in at school
were mathematics and geometry which encouraged
Nobbs to look into readings about technical drawing
which made her want to pursue a career in engineering.
Nobbs support from her family was sceptical and her
father was not supportive of her career she had picked
however Nobbs did not stop and continued to persuade
a firm that worked with heating and ventilation
engineers that she would be a strong asset to the
company in the drawing office. During WWII Madeleine
designed air raid shelters, factories and boat ventilation
and went on working in several jobs and joined her
father's firm in 1945when she was a qualified engineer.
In 1941 Nobbs joined the Women's Engineering Society
and later on became president of the society in 1959.
