Maria Montessori
EDUCATION (1870 - 1952)
Maria Montessori was an Italian physician and
educator who was best known for her work
and research into teaching approaches. This
led her to develop the 'Montessori Method'
which is still used today all over the world. It
involves the philosophy that children are
independent learners and thrive in safe
environments. Montessori's own education
began in an all-boys school before she
graduated from the University of Rome
in medicine in 1896. Throughout her life she
broke down gender barriers and exceeded
expectations with regards to the scope of
women's achievements at that time.
