Mary Rand
TRACK & FIELD ATHLETE (1940 - present)
Mary Rand helped to change the perception
of women's athletics in Britain. She won the
long jump at the 1964 Summer Olympics by
breaking the world record, the first British
female to win an Olympic gold medal in track
and field. She remains the only Great Britain
female athlete to win three medals in a single
Games. She has broken both British and
world records in the long and triple jump. In
2009, Rand was inducted into the England
Athletics Hall of Fame.
Ann Packer
SPRINTER, HURDLER, LONG JUMPER
(1942 - present)
Ann Packer was a successful British athlete
who broke records in the 1964 Olympics in
Tokyo. She was very versatile; competing in
sprinting, hurdles and long jumping. In 1964,
she competed in the 400 metres and was
awarded the silver medal; setting a European
record of 52.20 seconds. She then competed
in the 800 metres with no experience at
international level running. Her eighth time
racing the event was in the 800m final in
1964. She stormed through the event winning
gold and creating a new Olympic and
European record of 2:01.1. She later retired
aged 22 after the Tokyo Olympics and married
Robbie Brightwell, silver medallist in the 1964
Olympics 4x400 metre relay. Both Packer and
Brightwell were awarded the MBE in 1969.
