Mary Harris Smith
ACCOUNTANCY (1844 - 1934)
Mary Harris Smith was an English accountant
and entrepreneur, best known as the first
woman to complete the ICAEW qualification.
However, despite this huge achievement she
was denied admission because she was a
woman and it took almost 30 years for this
ruling to be overturned. When she finally won
the battle she became the world's first
female chartered accountant who was
admitted as a fellow. She was also
an advocate for feminism, promoting and
supporting woman's rights throughout her
lifetime. She was particularly passionate
about women's right to vote, as well as
promoting better employment rights.
Muriel Siebert
FINANCE (1928 - 2013)
Siebert was an exceptional woman in the field
of finance becoming the first woman to own a
seat on the New York Stock Exchange. This
accomplishment was fuelled by her own
frustrations in the gender pay gap as she
always earned less than her male colleagues.
Siebert later became New York's first woman
superintendent of banking and founded her
own brokerage firm which still operates today.
