Cheryl Dunye
FILM DIRECTOR (1966 - present)
Cheryl Dunye is a Liberian-American film
director, known for her films, most notably
'The Watermelon Woman', which often
explore her lived experience as a black
lesbian. Her films blend the personal with
political and challenge social and cultural
norms. For 'Stranger Inside' she visited the
Minnesota Correctional Facility for Women
and interviewed and led a writing workshop
for the women. She also held a reading of the
screenplay, with parts of it read by the
inmates from the writing group, to focus on
the reality of the community and allow them to
tell their own stories. Her films incorporate her
own images with others, creating a sense of
truth and fiction within the narrative.
