Alice Milliat
ROWER, SWIMMER, HOCKEY PLAYER
(1884 - 1957)
Alice Milliat was a pioneer in women's sports
and advocated for women's Suffrage. She
organised the first international athletic
competitions for women. She pressured the
international Olympic committee to add more
women's events to the Olympic Games. The
French rower, swimmer, hockey player and
translator worked tirelessly to push for more
opportunities for women in sport, also founding
the Fédération Française Sportive Féminine. In
the 1900 Games, women were allowed to
compete in very few games like golf and tennis.
In 1919, Milliat requested that women should be
included in track and field events for the 1924
Games, she was refused. Her work helped to
push for the 1922 Women's Olympic Games in
Paris. Milliat paved the way for women, creating
opportunities in sports. Alice Milliat died in 1957,
aged 73.
