Dorothy Draper
INTERIOR DESIGNER (1889 - 1969)
Dorothy Draper, born 1889, was America's
first female interior designer. She had a
unique take on colour, texture, and ornate
fixtures. Draper was one of the first people to
believe that being surrounded by colour in a
living space made people happier. She
became the pioneer of a style dubbed
'Modern Baroque' and her designs were
popular in suburban households. Draper's
anti-minimalism ethos was found in many of
the hotels, offices and restaurants she was
commissioned to decorate. She is considered
a major influence on many contemporary
interior designers.
