Jenny Saville
ARTIST (1970 - present)
Jenny Saville is a contemporary painter and
original member of the Young British Artists.
Saville studied at Glasgow School of Art and,
in her final year, Charles Saatchi, the leading
British art collector, purchased her degree
show. Saville is often credited with reinventing
figure painting for contemporary art and her
large scale paintings of fleshy bodies, or
charcoal drawings of layered figures often
explore the rawer interpretation of the female
body. Representations of the nude body is an
important characteristic to Saville's work and
have brought her worldwide acclaim. In
October 2018 Propped (1972) by Saville sold
for £9.5 million, becoming the most expensive
work by a living female artist sold at auction.
Her celebration of non idealised bodies, have
broken beauty conventions outwith the art
world.
