SECTION 7: Strategies
7.7 Stakeholder Strategy
7.7 Stakeholder Strategy
We are committed to working closely
with our key partners and stakeholders to
ensure that we can optimise the benei ts
that merger can bring to the Glasgow
community and beyond.
All three colleges have established formal
partnerships and collaborative links with
a range of stakeholders and delivery
organisations. The merger will be an
opportunity to reinforce and strengthen
those links.
As part of our stakeholder strategy the
College Principals have established a
schedule of meetings with the unions,
the EIS/FELA and Unison, the Scottish
Government, the SFC, and student
representatives. The Principal Designate
has also embarked on a round of
stakeholder meeting with key agencies.
As part of the estates development
project, the design team, Atkins have also
conducted a wide ranging schedule of
stakeholder engagement meetings.
Other Local Providers
In developing this merger proposal, we
are mindful of the position of other FE
providers in Glasgow and would wish to
assure them and the SFC that we do not
wish to restrict choice or undermine the
viability of other institutions.
The merged College will seek to form
partnerships with neighbouring FE
colleges with a view to collaborating on
the range and location of education and
training of ered. There is no intention to
expand the merged College by attracting
students away from these institutions.
The local travel-to-study patterns included
in the recent SFC consultation document
on the college curriculum in Glasgow City
Centre shows that all three colleges draw
from a similar catchment area and we
don't expect that to change as a result of
the merger. By the same token, the other
Glasgow colleges tend to draw from their
local catchment areas and we do not
expect that to change.
As part of our stakeholder engagement
strategy, we intend to meet with the
Principals of the other Glasgow colleges to
re-assure them about our strategy and to
discuss options for collaboration.
The three colleges deliver HE provision
in partnership with the University of the
West of Scotland, Glasgow University,
Strathclyde University and Caledonian
University. The merged College will seek
to work with HE partners to deliver HE
provision in key vocational areas and we
wish to maintain and, wherever possible,
develop our strong association with
Glasgow Universities.
Again, as part of our stakeholder
engagement strategy, we intend to
meet with the universities to discuss
options for collaboration.
School Links
We recognise the need set out in the SFC
consultation document on the college
curriculum in Glasgow City Centre to
enable the community colleges to deliver
the school-college provision except in
some specialist areas of activity.
The links with schools remain very
important for the merged College
to ensure ef ective and appropriate
progression routes for school leavers.
We will, therefore, work closely with the
schools to ensure that we are able to
ensure a smooth and successful transition
from school to College.
Glasgow City Council
All three colleges have good collaborative
working relationships with the City
Council and recognise the need to work
together in such areas as economic
regeneration and meeting the needs of
the Glasgow community. We welcome
the support given by the Council to the
development of New Campus Glasgow
and look forward to an ef ective working
relationship throughout the merger
process and beyond.
Employer Engagement
All three colleges have been very
successful in developing links with
employers and part of the rationale for the
merger is to strengthen these links further
and contribute to regional and, in some
cases, national regeneration. The merged
College will be very well placed to
support the areas forecast to grow from
2012 onwards (in particular, i nancial and
business services, education, construction
and the maritime industry) as set out in
the consultation document on the college
curriculum in Glasgow City Centre.
Our employer engagement strategy will
be planned around the following features:
Working with employers through the
provision of both bespoke and relevant
vocational programmes;
Preparing students for employment by
developing their employability skills
Assisting employers to identify their
skills needs and providing workplace
solutions;
Listening to employers through the
development of both general and
sector based links;
Developing distance learning delivery
to allow blended, College supported,
l exible, open learning for vocational
qualii cations;
Providing work-based learning through
apprenticeships.
Staf and Students
We fully recognise the contribution
that staf and students can make
to the development of a successful
merged College. They are both key
stakeholders. To support our staf and
student engagement strategies (covered
elsewhere in this document); we will be
meeting regularly with staf and student
representatives in the run up to merger
and beyond.
