CITY OF GLASGOW COLLEGE / MERGER PROPOSAL DOCUMENT
9
SECTION 4
Aims and Objectives (continued)
Our rationale for the merger is mindful of our key stakeholders
and their priorities, aims and objectives:
The Scottish Government's priority for "Colleges as highly
ef ective, world class organisations; with high quality buildings,
facilities and equipment contributing to enhancing the
experience for students";
The Scottish Funding Council's need for Colleges
to look at "collaboration and co-location in order to ensure
an ef ective and ei cient solution…to provide the most
ef ective learning environment for the 21st century";
The Glasgow Economic Forum's statement that
"....skills are the key to raising productivity. Education is the
most important formal route to acquiring the skills for success."
At the heart of the new College will be the increasingly high
expectations from employers and the community in our great
city of Glasgow and beyond. We will be promoting new ways of
social inclusion and economic prosperity through the provision
of education, skills development and learning to enhance the life
experiences and aspirations of both young people and adults.
We will strive to promote an environment that is accessible to
all, promotes equality of opportunity to all and values the
diversity of all. With this in mind our objectives will be:
To of er "More Choices More Chances" through collaboration
with schools, regeneration agencies, universities and other
colleges and through ef ective and meaningful partnerships
with employers and industry groups;
To develop work ready specialisms, responsive to local
and national training priorities, with attractive, l exible,
modern and technology saturated facilities;
To increase choice by developing a greater range
of opportunities for specialism and progression;
To ensure that the new curriculum avoids duplication and
unnecessary competition in key parts of the curriculum;
To increase local participation rates through services
targeted, for example, at employability skills and those
disaf ected younger 16-19 year old students who are
currently not in education, employment or training;
To increase student retention and success rates;
To optimise advice, support and guidance for students;
To remain i nancially sustainable, and to allow continued
investment in our estate, facilities, equipment and our staf ;
To actively develop new collaborations and partnerships
to support both a new Learning Quarter for Glasgow
and new articulation routes;
To provide i rst class services to enable local people to
compete more successfully in the job market and to
encourage employers to train their staf ;
To transform Information Learning Technology (ILT) by
developing high quality Media and Electronic-learning,
social learning, distance learning and a range of l exible
learning opportunities.
Our three colleges are currently located in 10 buildings across
8 sites with a range of additional temporary accommodation.
Much of the estate is, however, of poor quality, dii cult to
redesign or redevelop and no longer i t for purpose for a
College that wishes to give its students the highest possible
opportunities and learning experiences.
We recognise the weight of expectations on us from
political, civic, partner, internal and other stakeholders
to deliver this once in a lifetime opportunity for the
students of Glasgow and Scotland.
