SECTION 7: Strategies
7.6 ICT Strategy
New Campus Glasgow - The benei ts of
merger are even greater when combined
with the opportunities which arise from
the development of the new campus:
Fresh Start - The growth and
development of three individual
colleges over a number of years
has inevitably been shaped by the
constraints of working within buildings
designed before computer networks
existed. Computer systems have had
to i t as best they can within these
constraints. However a purpose built
campus will provide an opportunity
to formulate strategy from scratch
and, importantly, integrate disparate
systems. In this way, an infrastructure
that puts the teaching and business
needs to the fore will be developed
while eliminating the wasteful (data)
duplication caused by incompatible
systems.
Network Resilience - A high degree
of network resilience can be achieved
by duplicating critical parts of the
infrastructure in both sites (City and
Riverside). The dual sites will also
provide an elegant solution to the
requirement for of -site data backup.
In general all aspects of business
continuity can be enhanced (and costs
reduced) by ensuring that, for critical
systems, each site acts as a backup for
the other.

Improved Services & Facilities - We
now have the opportunity to plan for
a one-stop shop which encompasses
library, access to technology, a range
of study facilities including quiet areas,
discussion and group work facilities,
seminar rooms, interview rooms,
designated social areas, cafeteria.
Student services such as careers advice,
bursary information and welfare advice
could also be housed in one large area,
of ering a 'one-stop-shop' for learners.
Innovation - The opportunity to create
an 'incubate' facility, a technologyrich
environment which encourages
creativity and innovation. This would
be a l exible space (with e.g. movable
- possibly 'write-on' - walls allowing
the room to be easily reconi gured;
adjustable lighting to create dif erent
moods; modular furniture - possibly
interactive e.g. Microsoft Surface
tables). It would provide access to
emerging technologies; projection and
recording facilities and staf , ensuring
users make best use of the space and
are fully supported. The main aim of the
facility would be for staf development
but it could also be used for teaching,
exhibition and internal/external events.

7.6.5 Strategy - Estates Related
(New Campus Glasgow)
We have produced a fully developed ISLT
strategy (appended to this document for
clarity and completeness) covering both
critical business systems and network
infrastructure. It is important to state that
this Strategy aims to:
provide a vision of integrated
information and learning systems
for the new College;
inform the design process by providing
a baseline for ICT infrastructure,
facilities and services;
provide a framework for operational
planning;
encourage dialogue between New
Campus Designers and members of
staf and the student bodies;
The intended audience for this Strategy
are the Principals / College decision
makers, the architect-led design team,
other NCG Workgroups and the New
Campus Glasgow delivery team.
By dei nition this Strategy must be
informed by the Curriculum and Support
Services Strategic Briefs currently being
prepared; as such this is an initial draft
in an iterative process that will not be
concluded until the Vision and Business
Strategies for the New College are agreed
