As part of the merger process the colleges
have consulted widely with students, staf ,
trade unions, and other key stakeholders.
The proposed merger was supported by
the favourable comments of some of our
key stakeholders
George Black, Chief Executive,
Glasgow City Council
'The unique three-college campus
development is a hugely exciting project
for Glasgow and Scotland, helping to
enhance the Glasgow's Learning Quarter
yet further and providing a perfect learning
environment for the business leaders of the
future. It is important that we provide the
right facilities to give students the skills that
business needs and the state-of-the-art
development on Cathedral Street will
do exactly that.'
Lesley Sawers, Chief Executive, Scottish
Council for Development and Industry
'SCDI believes that Scotland's economic
prospects depend largely on the development
of a highly skilled workforce, ready to take on
the challenges of the future. New Campus
Glasgow is central to this aim, delivering the
skills needed by employers to return Scotland
to economic prosperity.'
A comprehensive consultation document
was prepared and circulated widely during
the latter half of November 2009, with a
closing date for the consultation period
of 18 January 2010. The consultation
document was also posted on all
three college websites and the New
Campus Glasgow Website, with the
option to respond on-line to encourage
stakeholders to respond.
We received nearly 90 responses to the
consultation from a range of stakeholders,
students, staf , and partner organisations.
The responses rel ected a range of
views on the merger with the majority
of respondents being supportive of the
proposed merger. However, as expected,
the consultation process presented
the opportunity for students, staf and
stakeholders to raise questions relating to
the new College and the merger process.
Questions ranged from 'big ticket' items
such as curriculum issues to very specii c
issues relating to car parking.
The response from Unison, for example,
noted that: 'There are no details of any
shared services and whether there is any
intention to outsource any services.'
We have taken account of the responses
to the consultation in a number of ways,
Very specii c issues in relation to
curriculum areas were referred to the
appropriate member of the Merger
Steering Group for a response, for
example a question in relation to the
co-location of maritime, engineering
and international activity on one site
was referred to GCNS for input and a
response was sent to the stakeholder
by the Merger Co-ordinator;
Suggestions in relation to the name
of the new College were gathered
and reviewed as part of the process of
selecting a new name;
Student and staf issues and concerns in
relation to the merger will be picked up
by the Communication Facilitators and
responses to questions will appear on
the New College Website. We are also
considering a section on the Website
titled "You said - We did" which will
detail our response to issues raised
by staf ;
Other responses were noted for
future reference.
