6.1.1 A Curriculum for Glasgow
The creation of this new college allows us
to build on the distinctive, sector-leading
specialisms of ered by the partner colleges.
We are committed to a comprehensive and
mixed portfolio with our distinctive specialist
HE provision supported by non-advanced FE
provision. We will ensure that the needs of our
very diverse range of students will continue
to be met and we will review our portfolio in
preparation for moving to our new buildings
to ensure that the curriculum we of er is wellco-ordinated
and well-designed to meet the
needs of Glasgow and Scotland as we move
out of the current recession.
In doing so we will be mindful of the guidance
issued by the SFC (3 December 2009) in which
it sets out its priorities for Glasgow City Centre.
Their analysis suggests that student numbers
are likely to decline because of demographic
trends. However, i gures produced by
Glasgow City Council show that inward
migration has more than compensated for
the declining population trend identii ed in
the 2001 census. Glasgow is growing and we
expect to grow too. We anticipate growth in
Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
activity and part-time learning as people
work for longer and require to retrain and
upskill. We expect to see modest growth and
a consolidation of our high-volume delivery
subjects, with continued emphasis on those
areas that are seen as highly vocational or
those with clear evidence of employability or
study progression routes.
We plan to build on the strengths we have
to deliver world class learning with style.
We have a diverse learning community with
17% of our learners coming from Black or
Ethnic Minority backgrounds and 36 dif erent
countries (2008-09). Many of our students are
'Fresh Talent' Scottish citizens. This richness will
be rel ected in our innovation and l exibility in
pedagogical approaches and we will seek out
and embed new approaches
to learning and teaching so that we can
apply our knowledge for what works best for
students and staf alike to the design of our
proposed new estate and its technologysaturated
learning environments.
We will group our combined curriculum in
coherent groupings to facilitate synergies,
encourage l air and creativity in our students
and staf . We anticipate the creation of
Schools, each a Centre of Excellence in its own
right, some of which, like Marine Studies, are
already acknowledged as UK market leaders
with national and international reach.
Our curriculum areas make a distinctive
contribution to the learning fabric of Glasgow
and Scotland as a whole and we will develop
the curriculum to meet the needs of students,
and their prospective employers in ways that
meet the strategic priorities of the Scottish
Government and our funding partners
