Business, Management,
Law and Social Sciences
The College will be Scotland's leading
provider in business, management,
i nancial Management & Accounting, Retail,
Procurement, Marketing and promotional
subjects. Over 2/3 of business students
in Glasgow study in our partner colleges.
Niche specialisms such as Procurement and
Supply Chain training are of ered and are
expected to expand in the run up to the
Commonwealth Games. Law and Paralegal
Services serve a signii cant niche market with
a recently developed Centre for Paralegal
Studies. Progression to Higher Education
is strong in all these areas with advanced
standing progression on most courses. Our
business-focussed awards prepare learners for
advanced technician and professional grade
practitioners and a high proportion progress
to degree study in partner HEIs. We expect
to extend our well-developed relationship
with the University of Strathclyde and other
neighbours in Glasgow's Learning Quarter to
provide streamlined progression from entry
stages to degree and postgraduate study.
Computing and Internet Technologies
Our College is a specialist provider in
computing and Internet Technologies,
including software and hardware technologies
and interactive media. Our specialist portfolio
of ers HN courses that are not viable
elsewhere and consequently we deliver
progression and technical expertise for those
who begin their studies in other colleges.
We do not expect rapid growth in this area
of the curriculum although there are likely to
be shifts in emphasis as technologies change
bringing new specialisms in IT & logistics; 3D
computer animation; games technologies;
bespoke/vendor training/higher level training
and networking/technical support. The new
college will continue to incorporate vendor
accreditation into programmes to of er added
value and industry recognition as well as
nationally-recognised qualii cations.
We expect our teaching teams to lead in the
sector's response to the recent HMIE review of
Computing and ICT. Merger will enable us to
pilot fresh approaches to learner engagement
and to course design in computing - a
strategy that will be facilitated by bringing
together our complementary specialist
provision and by exploiting the opportunities
to contextualise generic IT applications
training within the context of our specialist
vocational subjects and settings.
Construction & Built Environment
Our portfolio ranges across a full range of
trade and craft areas (including brickwork,
l oor coverings, joinery, masonry, plasterwork,
painting and decorating, wall and l oor
tiling and some specialist areas such as gas
training). It accounts for 43% of construction
skills delivery in Glasgow and more than 10%
of the total for Scotland. This comprehensive
portfolio allows students to start at access
level and progress to degree with specialist
areas in heritage and conservation
and professional and technician level
qualii cations. The professional disciplines
such as architectural technology, construction
management, quantity surveying and
pathways into planning are particular
strengths of this provision due to the broad
range of entry pathways. Apprenticeship
opportunities, in conjunction with
Construction Skills, will remain an important
part of the menu of provision.
We will build on our acknowledged strength
in this area to develop courses in sustainable
development including the use of 'ecologically
sympathetic' materials, renewable energy
and organic waste control systems. We will
continue to meet specialist requirements
for the provision of traditional skills linked
to conservation and heritage linked to
the national strategies on tourism and the
environment.
Creative Industries
Just over 1/5 of our combined curriculum
lies in the Creative Industries, rel ecting the
importance of the knowledge economy
to Scotland. The provision ranges across
diverse disciplines including Digital Media;
Digital Animation; 2D/3D Design; Design &
Creative Crafts; Fine Art & Illustration; Printing;
Television Production; Radio Broadcasting;
Photography; Journalism; Performing Arts;
Set & Prop Design.
With an excellent employability record
in Creative Media we plan to further
develop areas such as television and radio
broadcasting, design/digital art and printing.
The presence of the BBC, Scottish Media
Group (SMG) and HEIs in Glasgow provides
a range of pathways into employment and
degree study and places our provision at
the heart of a creative hub for Glasgow
and the west.
Engineering
Our engineering provision currently includes
marine, mechanical, electrical and electronic
with particularly large numbers of both UK
and International students from the marine
industry. This provision has a signii cant
reputation internationally and the close links
with the Engineering and Shipping Industries
as well as good articulation links with the
University sector are a i rm foundation for
development and growth in the future.
Demand both from the UK and internationally,
is expected to rise signii cantly as the world
moves out of recession with a resultant
growth in international trade. A worldwide
shortage of seafaring oi cers and trained
engineers has been identii ed in a variety of
industries and we expect this to result
in increased business for the college.
