Professional qualii cations
The college will deliver a wide range of
higher professional and post graduate
qualii cations on a scale usually
associated with a university and bringing
together the well-recognised specialist
expertise associated with them. The
college will provide accredited awards for
chartered institute, professional bodies
and vendor organisations3.
This curriculum with advanced
professional standing will make the
college particularly attractive to students
studying at SCQF levels 8 and above and
this, in turn, will increase opportunities
for applied research for both staf and
students.
International students
In 2008-09 we enrolled a total of
1754 international students of which
approximately 95% studied Maritime
and Engineering subjects. Many factors
combine to make our college increasingly
attractive to international students.
Globalisation and the increasing mobility
of international students; the college's
educational reputation; our expertise
in the delivery of English language; the
interface with the university community;
favourable exchange rates and a city
centre location will make Glasgow's city
centre college increasingly a i rst choice
destination.
In addition, work already ongoing in
the Marine i eld to develop provision
of delivery in other countries, can be
ef ectively used to develop provision
across all areas in the new college so that
the reputation and strategic direction of
the college achieves its vision of being
world class. Extensive international links
built across all areas of the curriculum will
increase student recruitment to further
enrich the cultural life of Glasgow and
Scotland as a whole.
The economic contribution that
international students make to the
economy of Glasgow and Scotland is
widely recognised. A recent study on the
potential benei ts of a new college facility
in Glasgow estimated that an additional
400 overseas students per year would
be likely to come to Glasgow as a result
of the new college, contributing £4m
annually to the city's economy.
Learners with
additional support needs
The college will continue to provide
well-supported entry pathways into
vocational disciplines for students with
additional support needs. The combined
organisation will have a much enhanced
support framework allowing staf to
respond proactively to individual needs.
It is recognised that the support
infrastructure available to students
within the merged college is likely to
be an increasingly important aspect of
college provision. This is inl uenced by
the changing proi le of FE students and
driven by:
Social inclusion & widening access
strategies as embedded in Scottish
Governments Skills Strategy; 'Learning
for All'; MCMC; 16+ Learning Choices;
Curriculum for Excellence and related
initiatives;
Equalities agenda;
DDA legislation;
Revised funding model for 'needs led
assessment';
The changing external environment
(economy & demographics);
The merged College's mission & vision.
The future delivery model will continue
to be driven by the needs of our students
and will embed the principles of the

recent needs-led funding pilot and
subsequent revised funding guidance.
The college will also continue to
provide specialist support in addition
to bespoke provision to students with
high functioning Autism and Asperger's
syndrome, Attention Dei cit Hyperactivity
Disorder (ADHD) and other pervasive
developmental disorders. It is recognised
that close liaison between key service
and support providers will remain
essential and that close consultation with
the student will remain central to the
determination of support interventions.
Objectives and benei ts for combined
support services within a needs led
framework would include:
Synergised systems and procedures
with regard to student referral and
framework delivery of support across
all campuses;
Enhanced service for all students
within a College based custom built
Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA)
Needs Assessment Centre(s);
Increase in the availability of specialist
staf working within Support Areas
accessible across both campuses;
Opportunity for more in-house training
of Extended Learning Support (ELS)
staf and subject lecturers to ensure an
inclusive classroom;
Opportunity to share best practice
in the delivery of Adult Literacy and
Numeracy.;
A centralised Equipment Loan service
with a greater range of enabling
technology and assistive equipment;
A whole college strategy for accessible
learning resources;
The merged institution recognises the
benei ts of academic guidance and
support and of the importance of the
full College support infrastructure in
realising good retention, achievement
and attainment and in creating a
positive student experience.
