1. Background
We created an innovative research project with industry which led to the
publishing of a digital book - creating a lasting legacy of female role models - in
support of International Woman's Day.
The faculty of Creative Industries at CoGC runs three-degree programmes at
level 9/10 on a 2 + 2 delivery model. As part of level 9 studies, there is a
requirement for Industry Related Learning (IRL) and during Covid, when this
became restricted, there was a need to act swiftly to provide learners with
meaningful employer engagement when courses moved to be fully online.
Within the College there is also a clear commitment for Faculties to positively
engage with Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and to provide platforms for
student and college wide engagement.
Combining the two themes; understanding the importance to students of
continuity in their work experience and building on recent research on gender
diversity and role models; Curriculum staff developed a creative project that
would provide a historical context of the achievements of women across all of
our faculty areas and specific subjects.
It had been noted that both men and women lacked the historical context to
name female role models, notable for their global achievements beyond their
extension of a family role. The research project aimed to address this through
positive engagement and a focused student and staff research group, creating
a living research project with meaningful work-related learning relevant to the
Creative Industries sector.
